The Signs Your Child Lacks Necessary Vitamins

The average person does not consume enough of certain vitamins and minerals, including vitamin D, calcium, iron, folate (vitamin B9), zinc and magnesium. But children are at even higher risk for deficiencies because they do not eat nearly as well as adults. That is why it is important to give them a multivitamin every day. Our blog post will tell you what signs may indicate that their diet could be lacking in necessary nutrients.

1. Constantly Sick

When a child becomes sick often, it is an indication that his/her immune system is weak.  Immune systems are the first line of defense in the body to protect us from infections and diseases.  If a child's immune system is weakened, it will not be able to effectively battle against harmful organisms.  If a child's body is exposed to harmful organisms, it will result in him/her getting sick more often.

In this case, parents should increase the number of servings of fruits and vegetables that are rich in vitamins (such as Vitamin A) into their children's daily diet.

2. Weak Bones

Children who do not consume enough vitamins can also easily develop weak bones. In children, one of the most common signs of weak bones is known as rickets.  Rickets is a condition in which the strength and density of bone are compromised because they fail to receive adequate amounts of Vitamin D from sunlight or food sources such as fish oils, eggs, and liver. Vitamin D is used to aid the body with absorbing calcium which helps make stronger bones and teeth. In case your child is not willing to consume milk, add some Horlicks powder if you want with flavor.
Horlicks’s ingredients include vitamin D and many more for strong bones.

3. Weak Immune System

When a child's immune system becomes weak, it will lead to a higher chance of contracting diseases like colds, flus and other types of infections that are easily passed from one person to another.  To prevent this, parents should do their best to provide for their children with a well-rounded diet that will help them develop strong immune systems at an early age.

4. Loss of Appetite

In children, loss of appetite is one of the common signs that they lack vitamins in their bodies.  When a child has a poor appetite for food, it will help him/her develop deficiencies in different nutrients which can also affect his/her growth and development especially if this condition persists over time.  Parents should try their best to find out the reason behind his/her loss of appetite especially if it is not a phase.

5. Depression

According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, depression is also caused by the lack of certain vitamins.  This condition can be found in children who are lacking Vitamin B12 and folic acid.  Deficiency of these vitamins have been shown to cause mental disorders such as anxiety and paranoia which result in depression.

6. Poor Vision

Vision improves as a child gets older.  It may be a surprise to learn that the development of vision is also affected by
vitamin deficiency in children and nutrients in a child's diet.  If children do not receive enough Vitamin A, they will more than likely suffer from poor vision or other visual impairments such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism.

7. Easy Bruising

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that helps strengthen your bodies capillary walls and blood vessels.  It also acts as an antioxidant to protect the body from free radicals in the bloodstream which can cause inflammation of the blood vessels and even lead to death in rare cases.  When children are deficient in Vitamin C, they may bruise very easily, and their gums can become sensitive and bleed.

9. Inability to Sleep

A good night's sleep is very important for everyone no matter who you are. It helps your mind and body rest so it can recover from all the things you did during the day such as homework and extracurricular activities.  Lack of certain vitamins can also cause problems such as insomnia for children because their brains do not function well if they are lacking in certain nutrients.

10. Muscle Twitches or Spasms

A lack of Vitamin B6, magnesium, and calcium can lead to muscle pain and cramps that result in muscle twitches and spasms.  Muscle cramps may occur due to a lack of water and/or potassium which is needed to balance the electrolyte levels in your body.

All parents want their children to be healthy and happy. However, it can sometimes be difficult to determine whether or not a child is getting the necessary vitamins they need in order to maintain good health. If you’re unsure about your child’s nutritional needs, check out these signs that may indicate your little one lacks certain essential nutrients. You should contact a medical professional if any of these symptoms persist for more than 24 hours.
